Of WOLP, by John Sutherland - read it here

I am pleased that John Sutherland, a critic whose work I like and whose opnion I have often found sound, has written this review, although I notice he doesn't actually come right out and say 'this is a good book, go and buy it'. He is right about Jasper having read his (Sutherland's) 'Puzzles in Classic Fiction', btw; I have them all myself, and can recommend them. I don't believe that's where Jasper got the idea for Thursday imitating Rochester's voice from, though; it's a puzzle anyone who has read Jane Eyre must have thought about.

I saw it thanks to Mr Ff's links, but I've been really pissed off about them not mentioning it, and then I find I've missed it...

It seems to me that John sutherland didn't really read the book too well. He says things like 'Thursday's dad is: 'A Chronoguard, a type of Timecop entrusted with keeping a multitude of parrallel universes straight'. I thought his job was to keep the one universe straight. And John also mentions Landen, saying he has gone missing and mysteriously slipped Thursdays memory. Not exactly the case, at all.

Or maybe I'm just being too picky.

Not at all, Kaz. That's what we're here for, isn't it?

hmm, you're right about the universe-thing, but I think it's okay what he said about Landen, as it would be too much to give out every little detail in a review. A review should get one to read a book, so there's no use in writing an overdetailed summary. But that's just my opinion.

In my opinion the review in the Independent should have had a spoiler warning attached.

The review was disappointing, and I have to agree with Kaz...I nearly choked on my toast when I noticed the errors! And as for suggesting our beloved Mr.FF got the idea from his work....??!!! Simon wrote:
