bigger books!

as much as i have enjoyed the adventures of thursday next, i am becoming quite perplexed @ the growing-ness of the books. 'the eyre affair' was normal sized, 'lost in a good book' was a bit bigger & 'the well of lost plots' was bigger yet! whats going on? is this some sort of joke that i just don't get (growing books r a growing nusiance 2 hold or carry around) or is it just some scheme which allows the author to charge more money 4 each consecutive (& larger) book?

I assume you're talking about the large paperback version of WOLP? It seems to a be a bit of a trend amongst some publishers to produce a hardback first, then a 'trade' paperback (large format), then finally a 'proper' paperback, some months later.

At least they're @#$%& (and lighter) than a hardback...

:-)

dave is spot on. Happens here is Aus as well. I got the first two books in regular paperback size, but I got to WOLP very early and it came out as the trade paperback first. I believe it's a marketing scam to get you to buy 'more book', before they drop to the regular size with a smaller price tag.

And darn it! The ploy succeeded.

It could be worse. Here in the US they come out with only the hardback, and you have to wait a year for even the trade paperback, and sometimes another year for a mass market paperback (although many books skip the trade paperback step).

At least there the trade paperback comes out at the same time as the hardback. I bought the trade paperback of WOLP and had it shipped to the States for less money than I'll pay for the hardback when it comes out here.

For example, the US hardback edition of TEA came out in January of 2002. The first paperback edition didn't come out until February of 2003, a month before the Hardcover of LIAGB came out. This is intentional - they want people to pick up the paperback, read it, and then immediately want to read the next book, so they have to buy it in hardback for more money.

Marmite?

Marmite is the stuff of the devil, isn't it? I accidentally spread my toast with a marmity knife the other day-yuck! WOLP is quite hard to lug around, but I felt it didn't suffer from excess stuff like LIAGB.

I must confess that I am not familiar with Marmite. It sounds a bit like Vegemite, though. Salty, black, and supposedly full of Vitamin B.

And those people who've tried it either love it or loathe it...

In all honesty, I've not actually tried marmite, although I've heard it's fairly similar to vegemite, which I did try once (and only once).

I gather both tend to be a love it or hate it sort of thing.

I find this also seems to happen with sushi.

Mmmmm....raw fish! And I quite like marmite, too.

Hopefully not together, though.
