I am a USA reader who has just finished "The Well of Lost Plots." Jasper Fforde is to be trebly congratulated on this coup de main:
First, for the wonderful leap of logic that a "deus ex machina" is of course the ultimate emergency plot device.
Second, for the skill to nevertheless not telegraphing the gag, so that I was actually surprised when it occured.
Third, for the brazen-faced gall to attempt it at all.
