Hmmm: In WOLP, doesn't it say that the story is stuck together in the WOLP, captured on an imigino-transference device, and sent to the author, who then rights it, completely oblivious to the fact that all the work has already been done? So the author may have no control over the story, and get constant headaches about the character, since every literary nerve is telling him that he should be dead.
Or, in the actual book that should be written, Zhark dies, but in the "fake imitation" (which happens to be by the same author) he actually lives.
All this made sense in my brain. Honest.
