It's not a specifically US/UK thing, AFAIK. He was called Shipman in early editions, but was changed to Tappman in later ones (and in the sequel, Closing Time). It seems that the change wasn't properly carried through in all UK printings. (He was played by Anthony Perkins in the film, there named Tappman).

Heller has never (again AFAIK) given an explanation, but the likeliest one is that there was a real Captain R.O. Shipman, USAAF, and he objected (well, you would).

One thing my quick research did find was an Eng Lit 103 assignment that asked students to comment on various characters in Catch-22; it listed both Captain R.O. Shipman *and* Chaplain Tappman. Now there's an easy credit.

Has anyone else read both English and US editions of Catch 22? I have, and am intrigued that the chaplain's name is different; AC Tapman in one, RO Shipman in the other. Has Thursday been at work there, or is it some fiendish plot of Hades?
