Number 401: A BookWorm |
A Bookworm Bookworm Vulgaris Essential to the BookWorld in the way that an earthworm is essential in the Outland, the bookworm eats words and then expels alternate meanings like a hot radiator. Without them, words would have one meaning, and meanings would have one word. They live mostly in thesauri but their benefit is felt throughout fiction. A word of warning: Although essentially benign, the bookworm can become too numerous, whereupon a book's prose becomes almost unbearably flowery. A good litmus test is to search for the banned word 'majestic' in a poem or story. Any more than one occasion may be considered a fair indication of bookworm overload, and it might be necessary to instigate a cull. The bookworm sleeps standing up, usually with its mouth open and snoring loudly. They require five individuals to breed successfully. Whilst apparently great fun, it does tend to generate jealousy, a trait that the bookworm has in abundance, numerous, legion, myriad, voluminous, multitudinous. |
