If Europe, Asia & Africa are "the Old World", and the Americas are "the New World", then WHAT is Australia? Is it another part of the "New World"? Or is it "the Newer World"? "Another World?" :-)

It is (of course) the Last Continent, and until Cookie 'discovered' it, it was marked XXXX on the maps. Not on the maps of the people who lived there, of course. They knew where it was. No worries.

I always though Australia was just your run of the mill penal colony. (pausing for PSD to make a suggestive comment) I mean, at least America had colonies with other purposes. Except for Georgia, that is...and it really hasn't improved much since!

What, Aus hasn't improved, or Georgia? Tell us what's on your mind.

Lol...mostly just that a huge majority of illegal weapons on the East Coast here are distributed from Atlanta . They come in through Miami and then hit Atlanta and get dispersed.

As far as Australia goes, I'd love to go visit. All but 2 Aussies I've ever met have been the most charming, fun loving people. I like Kiwis, too. But I think there is something to be said about the kind of people who come from former penal colonies. They tend to be so much more outgoing and have stronger personalities. And that's not a bad thing!

Oh, and never fear, you aren't the only colonial here, although I shouldn't say that I would ever identify myself in such a manner under normal circumstances.

I'm the particular kind of mixed breed that makes it terribly hard to vote here in New Zealand. One side of my heritage says "vote red, it's bettter for your people!" The other side says "No, vote blue, it's better for your other people!"

It is a conundrum.

well I'm an Aussie too.
And this fforum is doing rather odd things. Has anyone else's got the new threads about halfway down the first page? It's only this fforum though. How odd.

I had a group of Aussies come to my school. Rather agreeable group with wicked sweet accents, and at least one girl fell instantly in love with them.

Vanessa - I'm Australian - from Melbourne - we do read Jasper Fforde - don't worry. Hahaha. With all the foggy overcast wet weather Melbourne has been having (it's meant to be the last month of Spring) - what else is there to do but curl up with a good book?!?!?!

Hi - Yep I pop in when I can!

I live in Melbourne but am originally from Adelaide (ie a "croweater" as is the horrible term). Still consider myself a South Aussie rather than a Victorian and trying to teach my son to use SA pronunciation rather than Victorian (yes there is a difference - SA accent is nicer!!).

It's funny when people say "x is very Victorian" etc because you can have a moment of thinking "what?" as Victorian can refer to Victorian era or the Aust state of Victoria. Reckon it should be renamed, and no offence anyone from UK, but why the continuing link with colonial past using monarch's names etc? Renaming is very improbable I know but thought I would add my bit re republicanism whilst I am on the subject.

Orstrylia is underfoot!

There are many Orstrylians even those who are Victorians, over the age of 25 who read and understand the writings of Mr fforde, as we are the beneficiaries of good educational systems. Whether the generation coming through the schools now will have that ability I do not know. They will probably have to wait for the illustrated versions, just as most Queenslanders do now.

I have lived or visited most of Australia in general and have family and/or friends in many bits of it so I feel I can slag off all of it with impartiality. I also was in Swindon thirty years ago looking at a white horse, but it was empty, so I had a Watney's Red Barrel. I feel better now.

I have looked at the Nextian area of Swindon and the photographs make me cringe. I do not think I could ever go back to living long term in England again. It makes one appreciate Australia more: the sun (too hot and burning), the rain (too little too late) the bush (look Mum there's a horizon way out there (and it's on fire)) and the fact that it's a long way to anywhere.
