Colour by Nubers? Do you mean Shades of Grey?

If so, you almost have time to conceive & produce a baby...........

I think Shades of Grey is the series, Colour by Numbers is the first book...

But I have been wrong once or twice before.

Jasper read a chapter from the upcoming (July '08) 'Shades of Grey' at the Armadillo Convention held in Plymouth this weekend just passed. We were also treated to a lengthy Q&A session later in the day as well, during which he spoke briefly about his plans for 'One of Our Thursdays is Missing' (which he starts writing in January).

Is there any video of the Armadillo Convention?

I'm not sure - but the website for ArmadaCon (which I assume is short for Armadillo Convention, although as Planet Cool says I have been wrong before) is here:

So, do we have any concrete information about Colour by Numbers / Shades of Grey already? So far we know this: Eddie Russett lives in a dystopian future England where only politeness and cricket remains, and as it happens, he's tired of both. Is there anything more out there? I'm curious about how this new series will relate to the Thursday and Jack n' Mary worlds, if at all. Have you guys got anything to make me drool a little more until then?

Oh, and next year I've also got And Another Thing to look forward to.

I believe that the esteemed Mr. Fforde said that there is no connection between "Shades of Grey" and the other books. This was at the reading at the '08 Ffiesta, so my memory may have misled me.

Out of interest, I wonder if the U.S. edition will change the title?

<Of course they will change the title for the US. Colours will lose the 'u' and 'grey' will replace the 'e' with an 'a'.>

What concerns me is who is doing the dumbing down of the language for the US market? Are they (or should it be 'thay') educated and intelligent enough to spot these things that need correction for the US, or is it now done by a computer whose operators don't actually know what the machine is doing?

There's a plot for a story. Aged computer dominate society and controls the way the way the populace 'thinks' by controlling the language. Bit like an automated Academe Francais.

I don't think "Dumbing down" is quite the right phrase...

Yes, dumbing down is cruel and demeaning, that's why we call it "Americanising"!

Bunyip, that was pecisely why I asked! I will admit to not particularly liking the U.S. spellings, but like with a translation into a foreign language, surely it is only polite for the U.S. edition to carry the "localised" spellings?

(Should that be "localized"?)
