I got this great little book for Christmas: a collection of what the author calls "oxymoronica" (also the title of the book), phrases that seem contradictory but are actually profound or witty (or not).

Profound:
"To lead the people, walk behind them." - Lao-tzu

Witty:
"No one should be allowed to play the violin until they have mastered it." - anonymous

Idiotic:
"At the moment I was elected, the stormclouds on the horizon were getting almost directly overhead." - George W Bush

I always want to qualify the word "oxymoron" with "as opposed to regular morons".

It sounds like my kind of book, to be sure.

I have a copy of it. Got it on Amazon.

Borrowed it from the library a day or two ago and have just started reading it. Looks pretty good so far.

I also borrowed 'American Gods'. Read the first four chapters or so, flicked through the next 5, read the last few pages and gave it up as a bad joke. Didn't enjoy that one.

Really? I loved American Gods.

Then again, I like lots of things other people don't. I've yet to decide whether it means I have bad taste, or whether everyone else does ;)

It (American Gods) was OK. (We are talking about the Neil Gaiman book right?)

Just that and nothing more.

I agree with Martin - American Gods was fine, but couldn't really see what the fuss was about. I've not read any other Neil Gaiman stuff, so can't compare.

If you really want a book about gods, read Pyramid Scheme by Dave Freer and Eric Flint.

In fact. Go here: [www.baen.com] and look for it. I'd also strongly recommend Rats, Bats and Vats.

Our little library doesn't have American Gods. They do have Jasper's books though, so they are moving up in the world, branching out a bit.

Neil Gaiman defines good taste; draw your own conclusions.

Neil Gaiman collaborated with Terry Pratchett on "Good Omens" - which I like a lot; that's why I bought "American Gods" (extended version), which I liked a lot too. I'll probably get some of his other books the next time I'm in a decent bookshop.

Yep I like Gaiman's work too.

I myself am a lot better looking than he portrays me, though!
