I went and looked at the Sheffield off the shelf website to see who we pester about inviting Jasper into this perfect part of the country (that's if we need to and if Jasper doesnt have the eebie-jeebies about being in our vacinity). This is the website

The Festival will run from 18 October - 1 November 2003.

If you would like to go on their mailing list to receive the Off the Shelf brochure e-mail them off-the-shelf@pop3.poptel.org.uk

Great stuff - thanks! I've just e-mailed them, inserting short polite pestery bit. ;-)

And I got this reply:

Dear Sarah

Many thanks for your e-mail. We will add your name to our mailing list to receive the brochure and also to our e-list so that you get regular updates on Off the Shelf.

Thank you also for the suggestion of Jasper Fforde as someone to take part in the festival. We will consider this at our next programming meeting.

best wishes
Lesley Webster

Anyone else want to get some pestering in before the programming meeting? ;-)

I've just e-mailed them too, flattering them about how much I enjoyed 3 talks I went to last year. I missed Michael Palin, 'cos his show was a matinee, not evening, like I thought (doh !). Alan Titchmarsh was an absolute riot; one of the best stand-up comedians I've ever seen. Highly recommended as an evening out. I also saw Sheridan Morley, who was fascinating, and Antonia Fraser, talking about Marie Antionette. I didn't buy any of the books for sale but pleaded poverty and got autographs on my programme, an old copy of Gardener's World Magazine, and a (second-hand) copy of Sheridan Morley's biography of David Niven ;)

After the flattery, I asked them to get Jasper, saying he was a good speaker and had a devoted fan base.

As an afterthought, I told them that I was a writer too and happy to give talks on various fiction topics (No harm in trying :) )

Hey there,

I've been browsing these forums for the past few months (first read "The Eyre Affair" last June...and then immediately read "Lost in a Good Book".....there's no word to describe them!) and was pleasently surprised by seeing by home town as a subject heading. So am I right to think that there are many fellow Sheffielders on this forum? It would be great to get Jasper up to our seven hills....we've attracted Derek Jacobi and Kenneth Brannagh to our stage in the past year, maybe we can start attracting members of the literary world ;-)

Best wishes,
-Nick.

Oh, good grief another one ..... at this rate Thursday will have more supporters in Sheff than Wednesday do ....

Welcome to the fforum, Nick. Hang around, there'll be a pun along in a minute.

Puns are rather like buses around here - only more frequent and not as expensive.

Having seen rather a lot of Sheffield Wednesday while I was in the St John Ambulance, I can safely say that Thursday easily beats them for entertainment value. ;-) And no, I'm not a Sheffield United fan - my team's QPR, so I am the closest thing in Sheffield to a dispassionate observer!

Anyway, Nick, welcome to the Fforum as Jon says! I think this means there are now four of us - you, me, Andrea and Skiffle. That is, four that we know about, but any other Sheffielders who are lurking may like to take this opportunity to make themselves known and say hallo. We're a very friendly lot, even if we are all as mad as pants.

(Oh, yes, and there's my superintelligent cat Minsky, but he hasn't been able to post in his own name since the Fforum was upgraded, so I'm not sure if he ought to be counted in the Sheffield quota!)

Just got the reply to my e-mail to the festival organisers. They say that 'Strangely enough, someone else has recently contacted us about Jasper Fforde'
Jasper is definitely up for consideration, depending upon his commitments ! People Power !

And don't you just know they're going to realise what's going on...

If it looks like making them some money, do you really think they're going to care? ;-)

Apparently their workshop programme is already sorted for this year, so they don't have anything for me to do. I'm welcome to remind them in time for next year's festival. Wonder if it involves payment ..?

How could they possibly realise what is going on? They'll probably think it's one pesky person with about five different e-mail addresses and aliases...

Any news on where Jasper's tour dates in the Midlands are yet?

response from the Sheffield people:

"We will certainly consider Jasper Fforde for this year's festival, funnily enough there has been a lot of interest in him recently."

gosh, a lot of interest? how interesting... ;-)

Perhaps if we all refuse to pay our council tax unless they book Jasper; would that work ? Or maybe sending them a box of Thorntons would be better. If we clubbed together, I'm sure we could buy something pretty impressive.
