My copy has the infamous Captain Pugwash character names (Seaman Staines + Roger the Cabinboy) with a label over them.

Sorry to upset you all but that whole 'Seaman Staines' etc is an urban myth.

See [www.redflag.co.uk] for real Pugwash fun.

Ludwig! Oh, yes, wasn't he great? He was so delightfully surreal...

So why is it in the book, with a nice little sticker over it.

I should know I've pealed it off!

Does one "peal" something off by ringing bells at it? :-)

It's either the mispeling vyrus or that extremely common but rarely recognised creature, the Lesser Keyboard Gremlin. This causes typographical errors and other minor mischief. It is not to be confused with the Greater Keyboard Gremlin, which is (fortunately) less common and is capable of crashing your entire computer.

Probably because whoever wrote the book believed the myth or wanted to have a bit of a laugh.

My book certainly didn't have a sticker on the alleged Captain Pugwash names, and goes to some length to explain why this urban myth was so damaging to the series' creator. Part of John Ryan's livelihood depended upon giving talks to schools; once the story about the adult names went around, his work dried up.

I remember 'Ludwig' well too. It was a European production; odd but interesting.

Poor John Ryan! He also drew (I don't know if he still does) a hilarious cartoon for the "Catholic Herald" about a character called Cardinal Grotti. The version of the urban myth that I heard was that Ryan was an innocent party who had been asked to draw the cartoons based on someone else's storylines, and that the editors had altered the (supposedly) original names before Ryan ever got to look at the scripts.

*an apology*

I've trawled round in the dust and found say book. The sticker says:
"Since this book went to press, we have learned that none of the suggestive names mentioned above and under this notice ever existed in the Pugwash series. We apologise to John Ryan. the Captain's creator, artist and author for any distress caused to him by such suggestions".

Therefore, I eat humble pie and bow to superior knowledge!

Should I mention I work for a Rural Transport Department?

As long as you don't have direct responsibility for Oxfordshire County Council's transport budget, I think you will be safe!! :)

You work for a rural transport department .... would you like to buy some software? (Unless it's one of the Avon ones, in which case you've already got it).

Or runs them over..........

My cop out is that my department is a charity that encourages rural transport by any means. We get groups to run their own minibus/coaches and brokerage. Any form of transport you care to mention walking to rickshaws.

I have looked at the site, it might come in handy. I warn you I have spider repellent on me at all times!

Jon - you're right about the web site - it is awful (but then so is ours - www.nielsenbookscan.co.uk) Although I do happen to be wearing a skirt which exactly matches the colour of the large creeping arrow head that moves in from the left on the opening page...............
