Wow, yes, that's great! We'll all have to get together and make our very own Ankh-Morpork Monopoly set. I've got another Chance card for it:

"You are with Nanny Ogg. Go immediately to the Mended Drum. Miss a turn while she gets drunk and sings the Hedgehog Song."

Chance card: "You refer to the Librarian as a monkey, in his presence. Lose one turn because you are being bounced on your head, and another one while recovering from this."

Yes, and, aren't we forgetting something? A Thursday Next Monopoly? With various JurisFiction, SO-27, the ChronoGuard and, and, something else as utilities, locations mentioned in the books as streets etc etc

'You are boojumed. Go directly to the Well of Lost Plots. Do not pass the Library, do not collect any plot devices.'

'Pay £200 as tax on cheese'.

'Try to get off with Miss Havisham. Lose two turns while you recover from your wounds.'

'Your husband is eradicated by the ChronoGuard. Miss three turns while you try to get him back.'

Oooh, oooh - I did think of a Thursday one, but didn't think there were enough places directly associated. *but* - bookjumping! So all the "streets" are books!

Ooh, I want to do this now. Go is the Library. (oh, as you said.)

Jane eyre is Mayfair (and it even rhymes!) - the new version, of course.
Or maybe it's Park Lane, and Sense and Sensibility is Mayfair, because that's where Jurisfiction meet.

But what are the houses and hotels? New editions, in paperback & hardback respectively?

Yeah....or the "streets" are authors, and houses and hotels are new books?

So the players represent rival publishing houses? Which means that the pieces could include a Penguin... (And a Scottish highlander for MacMillan's; What else?)

I've been trying to find an image of a Monopoly board I could edit, but there doesn't seem to be one big enough anywhere. Can anybody do better?

Can't find a big enough image that's straight on...there's one of Transformers monopoly, but it's kinda from a funny angle.

I did, however, (to combine two threads) discover that Monopoly was invented by one Charles Darrow. Any relation to Paul?

No! Darrow's just a stage name, although his first name really is Paul. He named himself after Clarence Darrow, the famous American human rights lawyer, since he was initially studying law before he decided to make a career out of acting.

Back to Nextian Monopoly, though... wonderful idea, but how are we going to accommodate dodos? Do we have a dodo playing piece, or should one of the squares represent Pete & Dave's?

Ankh-Morpork Monopoly: This is the game about the time when Lord Vetinari was Patrician... For earlier times, play 'Ankh-Morpork Junta' instead.

In the Monopoly variant _ as well as the Junta one _ each player represnts one of the city's main land-owning Families: Ramkin [piece = Dragon], Rust [Helmet?], Selachi [Shark], Venturi [Bag of Winds?], De Worde [Book? Not a Printing-press initially...]. UU is also a landowner [Wizard figurine], but its player has a special advantage (allowed to alter occasional dice-rolls?) and disadvantage (Bursar? or just more likely to miss turns, because his agents are at meals, instead?). Who else? Maybe the De'aths might make a comeback?

'Go' is "the Patrician's Palace", 'Jail' is "the Tanty", 'Free Parking' is "Unseen University" (for a banquet). It's been so long since the last time I played Monopoly that I've forgotten what's at the fourth corner...

'Guildhouses' instead of 'Railway Stations'.
'Temples' (those of Blind Io, Small Gods?), & maybe the 'Whore Pits', instead of 'Utilities'.

Upgrading property from 'Houses', the next step isn't 'Hotels' it's a choice between 'Big Stone Buildings' (mansions, temples, guildhouses, etc) and 'Taverns': The latter yield more rent than the former, but are more vulnerable to events.

'The Lady' not 'Chance' (& 'Fate', not 'Community Chest'?)

***********************************************************

New Cards =

'The Lady'_ 'Assassin available': You may attempt to have one rival Family's head assassinated. This costs 'X'[not yet defined by me]% of their properties' current total value, and succeeds on a roll of 4+ on 1d6. They lose a turn, after which they must hold a funeral'. (Funeral details as on the 'Death' card...)
'The Lady'_ "Barbarian Invasion": You make £200, and each other player £100, exploiting this. Each player may add another £50 for any Tavern that they control, but must roll 1d6 for each Tavern for which they attempt this: On a roll of '1' that building is destroyed.
'Fate' _ 'Death': The head of your Family dies. Either spend 'X'% of your properties' total current value on the funeral, and miss two turns; or spend twice as much and only miss one turn, or spend four times as much in which case everybody misses a turn.
'The Lady' _ 'Tavern Brawl': One of your taverns is destroyed. (There might be several copies of this one in the deck.)
'Fate'_ "Red Sky At Night, The City's Alight": Half of all the 'Houses' and the 'Taverns' on EVERY site, rounding upwards (and destroying Taverns before Houses), are destroyed. (This card should probably be removed from play after the first time in each game that it comes up...)
'Fate' _ "Sinecure": You have the opportunity to purchase an official position that doesn't involve any work. This costs [?] and pays you [a tenth of that much] per turn. The position is lost if your Family's head is ever assassinated, or dies for any other reason.
'The Lady' _ "Kwesta Maladetta!!!": You have just acquired the Opera House. This costs you £(2d6x10) per turn in expenses. Whenever two players' pieces meet, except at the start or in Jail, their Family heads must attend a performance together (as a sign of amity) and pay you £50 each. Keep this card, which may be used to pay any rent bill of [how much?] or below in which case ownership of the Opera House changes hands with it.

Here are some more ideas for 'Ankh-Morpork Monopoly'.

Each player starts in control of one [designated] street, representing their family's inheritance. (Optional rule: The De'Aths start with an Assasin available, instead.)

"The Tanty" ('Jail') isn't a home-away-from-home: You must pay the City £20 in expenses during each turn that you are there (or £50 if you own any houses, or £100 if you own any taverns or 'big stone buildings' [or the Opera House]; Got to keep up appearances, after all...) or that turn doesn't count towards your 3-turn sentence. You must pay the same amount in order to leave Jail, too, even if you do have just rolled a double, which makes the 'Get Out Of Jail Free' card even more useful than in standard play.

Special rules for the Wizards: The owner of the copy of the game being used has first right of refusal on this role... If they don't want it then it's open to other players, and if more than one of those players wants it then they roll dice (highest score winning) to see who's lucky. Their piece starts at (and they collect £200 when it passes) UU, not the Patrician's Palace. The 'Assassin available' card can not be used against them, but if they are ever caught speaking the word "Eight" during play then they must roll a die and on a score of 1-3 their current ArchChancellor dies. They don't pay for funerals (as there's often nothing left to bury...), but they pay for the new ArchChancellor's investitures instead and this is the same in terms of game mechanics. They start in control of a set of two streets (which are 'The Fronts' and 'The Unreal Estate') rather than just one, but can never build anything larger than houses on these... and 'The Unreal Estate' is a mixed blessing (see 'New Cards', below).

************************************************************

Amended Card: "Tavern Brawl"... Add 'If you are currently at the same location as a tavern that you own then the incident happens there, otherwise you choose which one to lose.'

************************************************************

New Cards ('The Lady')

"Sausage Inna Bun": You buy a snack from CMOT Dibbler. Gain £10 (as saved expenses due to not buying a proper meal), but roll 1d6 and if you score '1' or '2' then miss a turn.
"Om Loves You": Lose 1 turn repelling missionaries. (Yes, even if you're the Wizards...)
"Pawn of the Lady": Draw two more cards. Both of them apply.
"Time likes you": Take an extra turn.
"The Trousers of Time": On your next turn roll the dice twice, and take whichever of those scores you prefer. However, if they both have the same value then you are paralysed by indecision and don't move at all during that turn.
"Magical Accident": You miss a turn. The Wizards miss two turns (one to cope with the incident and then one while explaining it to the Patrician). If you ARE the Wizards then you lose three turns (because it was a bigger incident). If anybody is currently on 'The Unreal Estate' then they lose a turn too, and the Wizards lose yet another turn as well.
"The Ankh Floods": Neither "Barbarian Invasion" nor "Red Sky At Night" can occur until after your next turn (reshuffle them back into the deck if they are drawn before then), and everybody moves at halved speed (rounding upwards) until then.

New Cards ('Fate')

"A Dragon Is For Life": Miss a turn, and then either give £50 to the Dragon Sanctuary or miss another turn. (Yes, even if you are the Ramkins: If that's the case then you spend the time out collecting from non-players.)
"His Lordship Is Not Amused": I don't know what you've done, but... Miss a turn, and forfeit any rents that you recieve before your next turn to the City's treasury.

Sounds like it's getting way too complicated for me. Ankh-Morpoch Junta sounds like a better idea - except that fewer people know what Junta is. (I've got a set)

I had no idea that Darrow was a stage name - I've *never* come across even a hint about that before.

Jon, that picture is actually pretty good, the Garfield one. Looks like it might blow up ok, but I can't try it just now - work computer has no pretty graphics packages. Damn.
