Cover act

I've long suspected that some of Robert Hale's western covers were a bit generic. I was just reading an interview with another author, who remarked that he always thought that the cover of his book, "Dollars for the Reaper", was a pretty good picture of his character, Jonathan Grimm. Then he found out that the same picture had been reused for the cover of my book, "The Paducah War".

I'm all in favour of recycling, but there are limits !

I suppose it's appropriate, really, if you think of all the Western movies that have had the same sub-Aaron Copland incidental music, and were all filmed in the same bit of Monument Valley (although as Bill Bryson points out, all the TV westerns were filmed in California, which is why everytime Star Trek TNG had an outdoor scene on an 'alien' planet the theme from The High Chapparal went through my head).

I've seen reused covers in the fantasy genre too.

Indeed no, it really was several different quarries! :-)

Why did they bother, it always looked like the same place. I was always amazed they never met the Doctor and Romana coming the opposite way.

(Somebody must have done a Tom Baker Doctor/Avon crossover, surely? Endless possibilities, that one ... )

is that you volunteering, Private Brierley? Well done that man.

That really made me laugh, because Tom Baker once threw his breakfast at Paul Darrow in the BBC canteen. (He missed... Paul had excellent reflexes from all that running around playing Avon!) They got on very well most of the time, but Tom Baker was... well... a bit excitable.

As for Dr Who/B7 crossovers, I think many have been done, but I still want to see Jon's. Avon might not be so keen, but perhaps he might grudgingly condescend to put up with the idea if we gave him a jelly baby!

Erk. What have I got myself into and when was I demoted to Private? I'm not sure I can dredge up my teenage memories sufficiently to produce something that won't be pulled to bits by all the Whovians and Sevenites on this fforum.

As for Tom Baker being a bit excitable ... well, let's just say Rasputin was the perfect part for him. (It was, too).

Tom Baker as Rasputin... wow! I didn't see it, but thanks for that mental picture (and it certainly is quite mental...)

There's a suitably mental picture here;

Tom Baker's Dr Who makes a guest appearance in an obscure B7 cartoon booklet - Drake's 7. Drake and his confused crew fly around in a ship called 'The Perculator', trying to avoid capture by some equally confused bad guys. It's very funny.

I saw Tom Baker on stage playing the mad, murderous brother in 'Arsenic and Old Lace'. He loomed about onstage, rolling his eyes and looking splendidly insane. It was a great production.

I have a crossover button (badge?). It says "Vila doesn't need a sonic screwdriver". Of course, my favorite button is the one that says "A seminar on time travel will be held 2 weeks ago".

Oddest crossover in print: X-Men and Star Trek: TNG.

Oddest crossover I've ever heard of, though sadly not printed - it was all done orally, off the cuff, to amuse a very intelligent three-year-old: Blake's 7 and Ivor the Engine.

If only I'd been there to hear it!

There's a B7 zine called Star 4 (which I just happen to have a couple of stories in), that has a story written in the style of Molesworth, complete with illustrations. It's brilliantly done and extremely funny.
