Well, that's the problem with the net - people are whoever they say they are. Not that it's stopping me, mind...

Yeah, well, I didn't do *much* trying - I stuck a profile up on xanga.com when i was registering for a blog there, ignored the four or so responses that came in in the following couple of months, and then replied to this bloke's because he had lots of books, I think!

Straight women probably have it best online - the number of women or gay men pretending to be straight women is probably minimal! Gay guys probably get people either experimenting or there to "gay-bash" them...

I know quite a few couples who met online though, now. At least 3 long-term couples (ie over 6 months) of my acquaintance did, one a gay male couple. So don't give up entirely, just don't expect a miracle either!

I once pulled through text messaging, which has to be some kind of achievement. I also met one girl online, but she was even more messed up than I was expecting.

On a different note I finally wrote to resign today. Hurrooh. (opposite of hurrah, c/o Blackadder III)

I do know one very well matched lesbian couple who met online, so it is possible to avoid the men pretending thing. They met through an online dating service run by and for lesbians, and you'd be a brave bloke if you tried to sneak in. The trouble is, it seems to have loads of lovley gals in the USA, a few in London, and none near me. ::sigh::

The best thing is to not be looking, and then love, or at least a quick squeeze will come upon you unawares. My last gf who I characterised as the Bacardi Breezer (young, sweet, intoxicating, but ultimately leaves you with a headache) has all but fizzled out, so I could do with a bit of romance. Preferably a bit more mature this time. I already have one daughter.

I would be worried that if I did put my profile on an online dating site that I wouldn't get any takers, I'm hardly a glittering prize.

Can I pinch that line to describe one of my exes? She even seemed quite sickly once you'd moved onto something proper...

I was talking to a friend of mine, who met his American wife via the internet. Was surprised to find they celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary last month. Their wedding can't possibly have been that long ago ! I remember it too clearly !

the first time I ever went into an on-line chat room I was accosted by some sicko who started talking cyber-sex and wanted me to bend! Took me a long time to go back to any chat rooms or forums after that.

In fact, just realised that this fforum is the first since then. that's it! I'm messed up for life!

Gosh, wow, I'm all of a flutter, the mighty PSD wants to pinch one of my lines.

Yes, indeed you may.

The Bacardi Breezer was a lovely girl really, absolutely gorgeous, but very high maintenance. And I know now how blokes feel when shopping with their wives. Nightmare!

Mighty Psd? *scoff*

The best way to cope with going shopping with someone is to throw yourself into it, and act like a personal shopper. If you get it right there's one of two outcomes: 1) they decide that it's too exhausting to keep up with you and they'll go alone next time or 2) major brownie points with her and all her mates.

I know what you mean by high-maintenance though. My last was very much interested in herself for most of the time, and even managed the rare feat of making me feel like some kind of trophy. The one before that needed me to stop her being dizzy, which was similarly exhausting. I'm waiting for somebody a bit more fun this time. (that's my excuse, anyway)

Is 'shame' some strange Aussieism for 'lucky escape'? And can I go to bed now?

Take it any way you like. And yes, Jon. You can go to bed now. Sleepy bo-bos. Sleep tight. and don't let the bed bugs bite!

Resign from what, PSD? Thought you were employed to write on the Fforum and google long and technical explanations - don't tell me you actually have time to do other things?? :-)

Carla - get back to your packing! You shouldn't be on the Fforum - you'll never be able to find your kettle when you get into your new flat if you don't concentrate!! :-)

I met my gf online too.
We've met loads of times in these past 3 months, and we really want to try hard at it, because we feel great together.
LDR are hard though :/

Ah, mine's not an LDR - he's in Glasgow too. I don't think I could deal very well with a long distance one :o(

Mine was a LDR but briefly; Claire came to visit me not long after we met (after I'd visited her) and never went back home.

I have now got 'Long Distance Information' as an earworm. Luckily it's the Fairport Convention version.

# I do not know the number, but I know who made the call/My uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall ...

Aww :o) That's sweet and fairy-tale-esque.

I'm subtitling Gary Numan at the moment - it better not become an earworm.
