It's called a pickelhaube (one of those Prussian/German helmets with a spike on top).

I'm full of useful information, me -- so now next time you're in Prussia and you need a pointy helmet to catch geese on, you'll know what to ask for.

had a dachshund once who used to try and impale himself violently on people, usually around ankle height.

Presumably as in the breed of dog, rather than somebody from Alsace. Thinking about it though - that was rather the point of the, er, point, wasn't it?

Spookily the alsation is also the German Shepherd Dog, GSD

I'm never sure why it's known as both, presumably as Alsace has changed hands so many times they're not sure if they shouldn't be French Shepherds.

Apparently it was because of (don't mention the) war when German was not a good name. So it was changed to Alsation to fool people. Didn't the royal family do something similar?

They did indeed, presumably as sharing a surname with the bloke whose troops we were fighting seemed a little bit unpatriotic...
