New Dodo Diet thread

The old Dodo Diet thread was getting too long, so I hereby launch a new one (can't work out exactly which bit of it to smash the bottle of virtual champagne against, but never mind... Wilfred can always drink it instead!).

I think the last subject was conkers.

Well it was probably bonkers if not, anyway.

Bonkers about conkers, or perhaps you can translate into some Scottish dialect?

Going back to the subject of dodos _ Did any of you know that Lewis Carroll was known to some of his friends as "(the) Dodo"? Apparently he suffered from a serious stammer, which often led him to say the beginning of his real surname 'Dodgson' as "Do-Do-Dodgson"...

Good job he didn't try to say his forename too much then, anyone hearing him struggle over "lew lew lew lew..." would've shoved him straight into the Gents whether he wanted to go or not...

Sorry. Thanks for that interesting snippet - seriously - I had no idea! Interesting!

Question: What does 'stauner' mean in Scots? I saw it in relation to the golf...

Seems only right I should follow you by way of returning the, erm, compliment Splat! Hee!

Um, I dunno either.

Sure you didn't mishear it, PSD? It wasn't "stoner", was it? Did they describe the smell of newly cut grass by any chance?

No, it's to do with there being Europe's largest viagra factory near to the golf course, and the village of 'Great Stonar'. Aparently this is a combinaton hilarious to Scottish journos, except the word they want is really 'stauner', apparently.

Ah ha, with reference to a Viagra factory, and the village of Great Stonar:

Bwhahahahaha!

stauner - from staun- to make something stand up.

Usually in the context of standing a barrel on its end, which is how I know it having worked in a pub many years ago
