Yes, I'm kind of watching that. Wonder how they'll all get on.

Do tell. I'm holed up trying to progam at Sarah's sans TV, and actually spending all my time on the Fforum.

They're forcing a load of sixteen year-olds to have a 1950's education. Bet they won't be caned though...

In 1950 they wouldn't have HAD an education at 16 would they? Isn't this a bit strange? BTW when they put the school leaving age up, does anyone remember why they wanted to do it?

They're not allowed to cane 'em, because of today's rules. But they are being pretty hard on them.

Mind you, most of them seem to be quite horrid brats who deserve it. I don't see what's wrong with singing hymns or doing long multiplication <gasp> without a calculator and I'm very much a student of this generation.

1950's hymns --- save us!

My nephew went to my old infant school and was coincidentally given the same hymn book I had been issued with. The teacher had been there when I was, which was 20 years plus previously, and laughed like a drain, I'm told.

There is not a single school in Sheffield that gets results as good as the infant school in the village that I was brought up in (comparing them all today, not with the past). It's not a rich area, either. It just isn't the city.

Wasn't there a TV experiment recently wherein they took a youngster from a deprived inner-city tower block and plonked him down in an expensive public (trans: private, fee-paying) school, and he ended up being brilliant at Rugby (to be expected I suppose) and Latin (perhaps somewhat more surprising). I often wondered why they didn't do it in reverse - send Prince Andrew to some inner city "comprehensive" or another incognito to see how well he did in Advance Crack Dealing or whatever else they specialised in there.

Yes, there was a TV experiment. He got expelled earlier this year...

What is That'll Teach 'Em *trying not to show my ignorance* ? A TV show? Oh, and I heard that that boy got expelled. Quite sad actually.

I was about to ask why you're posting now, but then remembered that you're two hours in the future. I'm in English at school, writing "What If"'s

Most people like the "What if woodchucks could chuck wood?"

Kaz, you've given me nightmares now! :'(

And Intrigue, that sounds like an interesting English project by my school's standards! We always have to do apostrophes, spelling, all the boring stuff that everybody already knows *exasperated snort* .

I used to teach in a CofE first (Infant) School. The children said the Lord's prayer every day. One day I actually listened to what they were saying and asked my class what God's name was. They all said "Howard"
They had been saying

"Our Father, Howard in heaven
Howard be thy name"

for years, and nobody had noticed.

Shouldn't the title of this topic more properly be "That'll Learn 'em"?
