Although someone from DuPont did say that the "on" part came from cotton and rayon, the "nyl" part was arbitrary. Later, they said that it was originally going to be "No-Run" but that they were worried about making an unjustified claim and just changed letters until they hit a nice sound.

I heard it was a combination of NEW YORK & LONDON, but that could be a myth-
