Don't beware of pies, have some! Also, try the Battenburg. (It's a bit stale, and we're trying to foist it off on unsuspecting new fforumites--oops!)

Dont worry about getting the hang of the place, it's much more fun when no-one has any clue what's going on. Squirrels, Pie and Battenburg seem to have become the traditional welcome basket gifts however, so do enjoy!

Hi! Fresh pies here, now. Sweet to the left, savoury to the right.

The yellow stuff is custard and does not go well with the steak pies.
The green stuff is pea soup and only goes well with Ozzie pies. They tell me.

Nothing goes well with pea-soup. It is fogging annoying.

Welcome. Have a pie. *fling*

Hmm.... Wonder if we can get an intro post pinned since we are getting rather a lot of fresh vic... new fforumites.

Hey! Don't pin pie floaters on all the aussies, that's strictly a Sydney thing. Down here in Melbourne, we like to think we're above all that ;)

Not literally above it,I hope?

Or does Melbourne have pie- floater dunking booths for charity?

Well, I know some porky people who would be at home in a pie....

Dont be silly. There's no *meat* in a meat pie.
At least, not an aussie one.

I'm a porky person who feels far more at home outside (and around) a pie.

Hi! Fifth Bear! Would you like some coffee, tea (hot or iced), or <roots around in fridge> a juice box?

When I were a lad we called pies "mystery bags" and the pie-floater, according to Sydney folklore, was invented at 'Harry's Cafe de Wheels', an all-night pie van at Wooloomooloo.

While pie-floaters are generally suspected to be pretentious and an unnecessary culinary frippery, most Australians have a permanent third-degree-burn scar (which we wear with pride) on the webbing between thumb and first finger from the lava hot, squirting contents of burst mystery bags. One can tell if an Australian is left or right handed by checking which hand bears the pie scar.

Chicko Rolls, by the way, were invented at the Wagga Wagga Showground, just around the corner from where I live. But don't try to pin deep-fried Mars Bars on us - these are either Scottish or New Zealand in origin, depending on which illegal immigrant one is talking to.

Deep fried Mars Bars were definitely Scottish ;-) Been going on for years and years now. When I lived in Scotland, just about anything could be deep-fried, provided it was edible in the first place...

Deep fried, as in batter-dipped?

And how do you deep fry a Mars Bar, so that the chocolate doesn't melt?

Mooxico I don't know how they do it, but at the LA County Fair you can get deep-fried EVERYTHING. I hear this year they are adding rattlesnake bites. I don't even know what those are and I am not going to try them.

"Rattlesnake Bites" sound possibly painful, and like they are something that needs an antidote. I'd be wary, too.

Our fair has deep fried coca cola....but I'm sure it's getting around, I've heard of deep fried snickers, and other candybars as well. leave it to a fair to deep fry everything.
