I like more "indie" stuff. I love The Bluetones and a Manchester band called I am Kloot.

I also like acoustic stuff -there's a brilliant singer/ songwriter called Boo Hewerdine who writes a lot with Eddi Reader (who I think has a stunning voice).

I like lyrics which mean something or have some wit to them at least and a good melody too. i like something I can sing along too (in private of course, where no-one can overhear me) :-D

Ah, so that's what they call it!
I always refered to it as "vocal masturbation"
& wish they'd do it privately if they can't contain themselves...

I like a lot of different music so it's easier to say what I don't like,
which, aside from opera, is whatever they play on the radio every day
because I'm sick of hearing it everywhere I go...

I could do without singers entirely, if only because they have to slow it down to add vocals-
anybody else out there like Dick Dale?
If so, you should check out Man...or ASTRO-man?, the coolest space-surf-punk ever...

In fact, I'll do this the easy way- check out the bands here:

... since I'm into stuff most ffolks have never heard of-
plus a rant on repetitious banality in my blog:
[blog.myspace.com]

'Nuff said- for now...

Yep, but normally I only catch him on radio. I've been listening to loads of Nina Simone recently, and her combination of soul/jazz/blues vocals and classicist piano renderings send me to a different world. The musical equivalent of the Bookworld, possibly. The woman was - and is - a goddess. Quite possibly the only angel in heaven wearing horns instead of a halo, and getting away with it!

Tee hee, "vocal masturbating". That and bad lyrics are almost painful for me to listen to. One reason why I almost never listen to pop music. Mostly I listen to either showtunes (especially old ones) and classical music (but only the fast, exciting stuff). Give me some Rodgers and Hart, or Bach, and I'm happy.

I love having a musician for a Dad! My boyfriend also likes it- cause he plays the guitar. Mum thinks we should play together White Stripes style.
I have played so little in the last few years!!!
Antony Johnson sounds like Nina Simone- I find him uncomfortable to listen to. I don't mind Nina though!

Dad sighs over how the Jazz singers he plays with are so overconfident in themselves.

My boyfriend always says that my favourite singers are small, look (I think vaguely) like and dress like me as well- Clare Bowditch in particular. He's silly like that!

I must confess that most of the names mentioned are not known by me.

I stopped listening to commercial radio years ago when one of the sub-moronic kept saying that this was the greratest song ever for some cr*p that would make an emu chunder.

I accept that different people like different things, but surely 'Smoke gets in your eyes' especially if sung by Irene Dunne (Nnna -there's a name and face for you) or 'O My Beloved Father' sung by Callas or "Heartbreak Hotel' by Elvis are better quality songs terms of lyrics, musical composition structure and performance than most of the pop music across the last fifty years? ( I must admit Kylie looks far better in a showgirl costume than Elvis would have, but that's just my personal preference.)

Additional item as correction:

Line two: after 'sub-moronic' insert the word 'di*cjockey'

Apologies for not reading properly before posting.

Apology accepted! I do the same thing- fingers move too fast and have a mind of their owwwwn.

I haven't listened to a radio in AGES. Normally have JJJ on soft in my studio, and shout ARGHHHHH! every time an Aussie hip hop group are on and fling the radio out the door.

Is it not harder to create deep and meaningful songs that are good and original these days? I guess there is not much that has been done...

(I also like early music- there are some groups who do medieval stuff, which is interesting).

I am still waiting for the next song from Hildegard of Bingham

Do you think we could arrange a mix of Hildegard and Gregorian chant. I think that the possibilities are tremendous. But not by me - I am essentially tone deaf, have no sense of rhythm and am busy looking after the 23 children.

I like aussie hip hop. And most of the other things everyone is bagging here.

Heh. The subwardens will get you. "Loud" in residence is relative.

See, unlike you real musos I don't 'do' written music very well, and if you want to do something a bit 'off the cuff' (which is what I like to do - i.e transforming a GM classic into a jazzy improv with plenty of scat thrown in) at jazz jams you are expected to provide lead sheets in your key. I can write a lead sheet from a full score but gawd help me if I have to transpose! Thus, I tend to stick to stuff that's easy to write out - unless it's a standard everyone knows. But leads are only a skeleton, as you know, so after that pretty much anything goes ...

Best thing I ever did was when I forgot the words to a Nina middle 8 second time round (i.e after the solos) and ended up trading scat vs the piano man/bassist until - bingo! - my head cleared bang on cue and I picked up the final chorus right on the beat. Got a standing ovation for that one! It was my first ever live sesh as well. Things have been going downhill for me ever since ...

Me - I'm saving for a plane ticket so I can catch a few of your gigs. Can't keep me away from a bit of good jazz piano!
