Hi all, I'm wondering if you can recommend any books to me similar to JFf?
I dont like anything with "Magic" in it, cant abide wizards and/or demons, trolls etc - I prefer alternate tecnologies, the kind you get with Jasper. Cant stand super humans, and I definately dont like really "dark" stuff. Give me a book that is clever and funny please!
The reason I love the Nextian series is that it is so believable, and the charaters utterly human (apart from the Neanderthals of course, but even they are believable. Dare I say I even struggle a little with the Nursery Crimes series, its mainly because of Ashley (am I being alienist here?)
So now Ive set you the challenge...

I read a book called the Stolen Child, about a child who is switched with a changeling and how they, and their families, deal with the changes. It was very believable, aside from the changeling aspect, and very moving and enjoyable.

Connie Willis is excellent.
"Not To Mention The Dog" continues her time-travel theme (from "Doomsday Book") and is an hilarious take on an already very funny "Three Men in a Boat" by Jerome K. Jerome.

No suggestions I am afraid. Although, if you like memorable characters Rats Bats and Vats is good.... Rats spouting Shakespeare ;).

You could try Foundling by DM Cornish, I don't find it particularly humourous though.
I'd suggest tentatively Frank Beddor's The Looking Glass Wars, no magic but lots of "imaginiation" is a bit actiony though which may not suit you.

A 'bit' actiony? It's way more than that, counselor...

Yet again, let me wave the flag for Chris Moore.

While quite a few do feature demons, angels and other spirits, they are no wider ranging in their fantasy elements than the Thursday books. (I would avoid "Practical Demonkeeping", though and perhaps "Coyote Blue" as the darkest of his books.

The counsel for the prosecution is reminded that we are not here to debate the witness' description of the work in question.

Sorry, Z.

I am still a newbie on the Chris Moore Forum and so did not think it was my right to mention the rules yet. Can I get dressed now?

Yeah, pics or it didn't happen! ;)

Required nudity lasts 3 months, then you can get dressed unless one of the divi gives a punishment of remedial nudity-
most folks enjoy it, so it's not really much of a punishment...

It's not actually a rule about not putting things in your mouth while you read-
just good advice unless you want pie & drinks spraying out your nose, all that cleaning up gets a bit tedious after a while...

Nettie, you might want to look for some anthologies, there's plenty of different themes-
read some short stories to get a feel for various authors' styles & then go from there...

Just donated it to my local library. I liked the premise and it had some really good ideas, but it didn't gel in my opinion. I liked it enough that I'd read something else by the author, but it didn't make it to the big bookshelf where books I will read again get to live.

I'm assuming you've already read everything ever published by Douglas Adams. If not, that's among the funniest, most clever stuff out there.

You also might like mine; I hope it's not in bad taste to recommend it, but it sounds right up your alley, although I should add that it's a collection of short stories and sundry, rather than a novel or what have me:
