Jasper's going to be a father? I didn't know that...
I'd suggest a toy that stimulates the mind, like a jigsaw puzzle or something of the sort. That's good for a baby no matter if it is a boy or a girl, right? They're supposed to help developing certain brain functions faster and better, and that's always good no matter how bright your parents already are (IQ is highly hereditary). I'd also suggest a book, but considering whose kid this is, I'm sure he/she will have plenty of those.

Don't forget the various colour schemes before they are mobile: something which can disguise baby sick, rejected first solids, partially digested strained carrots and peas...I used to babysit for a family whose lounge was carpeted in a ghastly deep pile which blended colours of cream, orange and green. It wasn't until I had my own child that I realised how sensible they were to wait until all their kids were grown before having new carpets laid.
Hmmm.... If we are knitting, I wonder if an eternal scarf would work....

I think that something more cross gender may be better- like 'Brokeback Mountain' dolls; Barbie dressed in Ken's clothing, Arnold Schwartzeneger push up bras for the would be body builder, non-gender specific psychotropic drugs, etc.
