I'm in the middle of WOLP & last night i noticed 2 review quotes on the back -
'douglas adams would be proud' Scotsman on LIAGB - completely agree
'this years grown up J K Rowling' Sunday times on LIAGB
what?!
is it just me? Was Mr Fforde just put in the same league as J G Rowling-in-it?
Don't get me wrong, i've read all the Potter books (and Barry Trotter - hilarious!) and found them all acceptably entertaining - but hang on, a 'grown up J P Rollins'?
Sure she sells trillions and earns gazillions and the whole world knows her name (fame!), even though she's just doing what pratchett's been doing for years but wrapping it up in identical plot lines and selling it to an easy-to-please audience. You cannot tell me that wit, ingenious literary x-referencing, continuously intelligent word play and the engaging originality of JF compare to the tedious drama and kevin the teenager-ness of HP5. I just wont let you, dag nabbit!
I'm not getting at anyone personally - 'cept J G, of course... where is she? in the cow shed, milking it... No, I'm not bitter, i'm a writer with 3 other jobs and P/T college courses, i'm REALLY bitter...
Seriously, is it just me?I haven't read the whole review and could be taking it way too far (just tell me when to stop).
did anyone read the review?
what was meant by this remark?
and who exactly puts these quotes on books?
*BREATH* 1... 2... 3...
okay... erm, gripe over...
I apologise if i've offended anyone (including J C).
that really scrunched up my eyebrows and i got all unbecoming lines on my forehead. nasty, man.
I haven't read the full review you mention but I think the quote is a valid one for reasons you actually mention. There are some basic similarities between the books...a world parallel to our own to which we have no access, with their own laws of physics and characters that can pass between etc...
But, you state 'You cannot tell me that wit, ingenious literary x-referencing, continuously intelligent word play and the engaging originality of JF compare to the tedious drama and kevin the teenager-ness of HP5. I just wont let you, dag nabbit!'. This is exactly what makes JF a more grown up writer than JKR, which is what the quotes says. More grown up, more intelligent, more sophisticated, and yet with some basic similarities.
I think it's a fair view to take (and also that JF is better and HP5 was really dissapointing).
Well, it's on my Live Journal, hence the categorisation as 'chat'. It's not really bashing JKR ... just having a little humour at her expense (she can afford it).

I think the review was meant to explain how Jasper's books are sparking adults' imaginations as much as the Harry Potter books have sparked the younger set's imaginations and thirst for reading. It was most definitely meant as a compliment and as a way to say that the fans are fanatical and he's reaching quasi cult status.
way-hey!! i'm online @ home wiv me nice nuw shiny computer!!!
Jon - excellent, and i don't see why you can't publish it, though i have no suggestions.
She (spit) doesn't seem like the kinda gal that would find it amusing though... after all she's had a hard life and she is the only single mother who hasever struggled to get by - we should all be worshipping her brilliance from on high. Praise be...!
sorry, lost it there for a mo'
hee hee
nggy (it rhymes with stuff and sounds like other stuff and the stuff it rhymes with pretty much sounds like the stuff it sounds like)
I just got to know today that I'm going to translate the first Barry Trotter book into Swedish (it will published here during spring next year). I have no idea how I will able to do it - there's more puns there than in Punjab!
But I'm sure it will be fun. And actually, the book is really good! I was a little doubtful at first, but there is even a plot in it.
