The problem with the Croquet match is not that it's a takeoff on Quidditch. THe whole sports thing is kinda ubiquitous in certain fantasy circles. But the ending was a little bit of a copout, simply because it happened the way you expected.
You mean it happened the way you expected.
I was busily expecting the unexpected, so although I wasn't surprised by the ending, it wasn't what I was expecting at the time.
I hope this is clear?
Anyway, I thought the end to the croquet was very well handled. I was expecting some hyper-complex, time-bending,
reality-twisting, many-hyphened event, but got a refreshingly simple escape.
But I suspect that if you expect the unexpected, and the expected happens, then you hadn't expected the expected, and thus the unexpected expected event is therefore what you expected.
Gonadlemmings! I posted a long complicated sentence about if whether "had had" had been unexepected and whether that "that that" that was involved would be expected as a result, and the fforum ate it! On toast! Grrrrrr!
You all fall into the common trap; I shall stand on the edge of the pit and taunt you mercilessly.
You take 'expect the unexpected' to be singular; it isn't.
In a infinite Universe, the 'unexpected' is also infinite; and, even if the Universe is finite, the 'unexpected' is still likely to be so large that you probably couldn't tell the difference. I suspect that the human mind isn't really capable of comprehending infinity.
So, 'expecing the unexpected' means that you are expecting one, or several, of an un-defined number of things to happen. [Possibly an un-definable number; more likely still, an irrational number.]
Write your own lists; don't send them to me.
I have lists of my own.
Who knows; you might be on one of my lists?
