Currie Wot

The original Currie Wot was designed by J R Currie and two examples were built in Lympne in 1937. They were both powered by a single 40 hp Aeronca-JAP J-99 two-cylinder engines. More were built after the war, and Wot-derivatives have been the basis for many replica biplanes, such as the Fury and SE5a, both of which were Wot-inspired.

Over the years engines have been enlarged and changed, and this aircraft, the 'Hot Wot' has been stretched to accommodate two cockpits and a Lycoming 0-320, which gives out a healthy 150HP.

I'm still learning the ins and outs of this particular aeroplane, but so far have found no vices. She stalls in a docile manner, lands easily, and has a sparkling rate of climb. Draggy with all those wires, so the cruise is around eighty-five MPH, or slower if you want to hold a conversation. It also probably wins some sort of 'lowest cruise with the most horsepower' prize, but is designed for +4 and -2 G aerobatic maneuvers, so should be very capable of basic aerobatic maneuvers.

Bought in late 2008 to keep me flying while my Rearwin is being restored (always takes longer than you think). Watch this space for a full appraisal of her aerobatic capabilities.
