I will stand alongside PC and defend his right to hold the wrong opinion! (Sorry that was rude.)

I will stand beside PC and defend his right to hold a different opinion even though I disagree with it.

Right or left, I'll hold it.

Sorry, that was rude also.

'Ere, wot you lot on abaht?

You can hold your own opinions, howeverso erroneous they are in substance, as long as you don't voice them.

More power to the Kitten.

PS. I enjoyed reading the Biggles books too. And Agatha Christie, and The Saint. I think James Bond is overrated.

Bond has a certain charm, though George and and Roger were particularly ugly men. I find the new one to be more energetic? I should see the new film, before I say that I am not convinced he is really a Bond.

Though, I have to say it was always ridiculous to me (even as a little kid) to have women falling over themselves for Bond. Wasn't Ian Flemming meant to have not liked Bond? Or am I imagining things again...

Hmmm. The Bond books are overrated and usually bear marginal resemblance to the films of the same name. Bizarrely I like Timmy Dalton 'The Living Daylights' but please don't deduct points for that alarming lack of taste.

I think that you will find that the films bear marginal resemblance to the the books, rather than the other way round.

That's the trouble these days. Give 'em a loan and the universities let anyone in ;)

I used to listen to the audio book versions. I vividly remember Dr No.

<Points finger at Skidz and sputters>

Surely if the films bear little resemblance to the books then the books also bear little resemblance to the films. Neither predicates the other.

the book came first so any later version resemble it.
"You look like your father", not "Your father looks like you". If you don't look like your father, neither is correct of course.

Young upstarts! In my day they taught us English and if we got it wrong it was detention, not counselling :-P

resemble: verb [T]
to look like or be like someone or something.

There is no (*) causal imperative in this case. A son can resemble his father and a father can resemble his son.

Stick your tongue out at me, will you? Ha!

* Edited to add vital 'no'.

If there is causal imperative in this case then the father cannot resemble his son: that would be counter to the flow of the timeline.

Frankly, you're both behaving like children and if you can't place nicely you will be sent to your rooms.

If Frankly is both behaving like children, I take it that Frankly is siamese twins. But which one resembles the other?

I think Skids has it though: both father and son may indeed share a "semblance" of or to each other but the "re" implies "again" so can only be applied to what came second which in this case is the son's "re" "semblance" ('likeness to a previous image') to the father.

"re" performs a similar function in assemble/ reassemble: you can't reassemble first.

Well, that's not what the definitions say but I'm willing to let it drop in exchange for large amounts of anonymous chocolate.

However I will also let it drop so that I can get rid of all this chocolate left over from Helloween (not a mistake).

I agree with Skids, mostly due to fearsome English teachers. But resemblance could be construed to refer to who you are first acquainted with. If you are a good friend of the son, would you not say that the father bears a striking resemblance to the son, once you have been introduced. The order of precedence is your familiarity with the individual concerned.
