You've never seen a cuddly hedgehog? I shall have to bring one or both of them to Haworth along with Wilfred and Dido!

I've seen cuddly hedgehogs. Usually holding big felt letters, for some reason. Very cute, though.

I'd like to report that I successfully opened (and drank) three bottles of properly corked wine at the weekend, with a normal corkscrew. I think I may finally have got the hang of it. Hurrah!

I bought a fantastic corkscrew for my brother - you put the screw in as normal, but then it had a ratchet-type gizmo which made getting the cork out a doddle...

Bought it at Salt's Mill, in Saltaire. I can highly recommend both the corkscrew and the shop (and the hockney gallery, and the cafe...)

I'm a purist myself... Proper cork.

I also have one of those corkboards made with proper corks. I can honestly say I personnally drank each bottle too!

Yes, I was building up a rather impressive collection since the council stopped making new guide dogs out of recycled corks (see earlier in the thread) but now my favorite Argentinian Malbec has switched to plastic corks, I'm wondering what I can make out of the plastic ones . . . any ideas?

Oh and welcome aboard, Tracy.

Actually, rather perversely, another reason I tend to prefer real corks is that the plastic ones are too easy to remove -- I'm rather pround of my extensive collection of corkscrews for every occasion, which have never failed me yet. As well as various mechanical ones, I've got a really plain, old-fashioned, depends-on-brute-force one (my favourite), one on my penknife that I carry everywhere, and a 'tourne bouchon' which is excellent for getting crumbly/broken corks out without getting bits in your wine -- it's a weird looking thing (2 steel blades, almost parallel, on a conventional corkscrew handle) and you wouldn't have thought it would work, but it does.

Real cork has an old school cachet, but as someone with poor upperbody strength I find the plastic ones 'glide' out more easily. And the plastic ones can be such pretty colours too. LOL

We drink a lot of wine at our house, and as I usually stop drinking when the room starts spinning I find the plastic ones invaluable for re-stopping the bottle I've just opened. Beyond that how about making some unusual garden sculptures, with some wire and the corks you could win the next Turner Prize!

happy drinking y'all

Hi Belochka!

I've just noticed that everyone that uses bt openworld has the same thingy coming up. I thought for a minute you were in the same place as Guy, but I guess not!

Checked your profile though, and you're a Carolyn? Me too! Yay!

(note to other people, eg. Dave, Rob - when your name's vaguely unusual, it's quite exciting to find another one...specially in a small community like this...I haven't gone mad, really! Er...)

Hi dante,

It's good to hear of another Carolyn, we are a bit sparse in the U.K. aren't we? I think I've actually spoken to about 3 others in 20 years! So do you get called Caroline a lot? (Apologies to all other posters here:)

yeah, it took me a moment to work out the ISP bit showing up. I haven't got up to all the other posts that exist, does anyone explain why the address is on here?

Hooray for plastic corks btw.

B elochka- nobody minds people going off on their own tangent, although I suspect Skiffle and I hold the record for the length of conversation so far held on the fforum...

I'm not sure why the end of the ISP address shows up, but I assume there's some kind of significance to it.

I agree that plastics amke it easier to stopper a bottle back up, but can't remember the last time I did such a thing...

Thanks PSD, been away from posting for a good long while and going 'off topic' is still a bit alien for a pedant soul like myself.

I do try to finish what's in the bottle mind, but impaired judgement late night/early morning and all...

Going off topic is almost compulsory here, rather like being strange!

Ah well, having found there's another Carolyn here I suspected it might be a coincidence too far to find an old school mate as well :) Worth a try though!

Yeah, I get called Caroline, Carol-ann, etc. Very annoying!

Here at work, in a department of about 40, there's another Carolyn, a Caroline and a Carla, so that can get a bit confusing.

I don't mind the ISP bit showing up *here*, but some places I'd probably not want people to know where I work, so I do think it's a wee bit dodgy.

I used to get called Caroline so much I just gave up and answered to it, thankfully I don't usually have mix ups now with other staff as I'm "that new temp". One of the many additional benefits in the field of temping. Maybe I should get that as a new middle name LOL.

Yeah, I answer to pretty much anything that starts with the syllable "ca", at least used in the right tone. 'Cause I get called Caz, as well. (This was supposed to be easier, you see.

"Pardon?"
"Caz."
"Shaz?"
"no, Caz."
"Oh, Cass!"
"No....oh, bugger it, yes."

I'm so used to being confused anyway LOL. And to think when I was little I use to long to be called 'Christobel' or something, bah :)
