Underage users _do_ get caught (though not inevitably), and I should know because I help to catch them. Don't worry too much, though. There is an unspoken consensus among those of us who get underage free users booted off the site that anyone who is a) very nearly 18 and b) literate should be quietly ignored, so I reckon you should be safe. You certainly won't get suspended through any action of mine. Unfortunately that means you won't get a welcome message as PSD did, because one of my friends is on the Abuse Team and I don't want to put him into an awkward situation... best if he doesn't know you exist till October, OK?

I know - that's why I'm being sympathetic! Honestly, though, if you take a look around the site at random and see some of the 14-year-old free users who are clogging the servers, you'll understand why some of us are so keen to report them. They just slow the site down for everyone else and they have absolutely nothing to say.

Edit: you have now been added, which gives you the right to read my strange ramblings! :-)

There are many and varied ways of catching them, but let's just say it's not difficult because there are so many kids. On Sunday afternoon, without a great deal of effort, I reported no less than 177 of the illiterate little blighters. If there were just one or two breaking the rules, nobody would mind too much, but the trouble is that there are more kids than adults on what is after all supposed to be an over-18 site, and they really slow it down at times (just you try posting in the evening when all the American kids are coming out of school!). And yes, indeed, they do say things like "hey d00d that sUx", usually with a serious shortage of punctuation other than ellipses and exclamation marks.

There are journal sites especially for teenagers, but the trouble is they think it's cool (or something) to go on an adult site, because it means they can join communities with names such as "sextips". Aaargh. By the way, apparently I may be on the Abuse Team myself at some point in the fairly near future, but I shall be quite happy to be officially unaware of your age! This does _not_, by the way, go for anyone who is well under 18 and thinking of getting a journal on Blurty: my advice to such people would be don't do it, but if you do do it, don't tell me. I don't want to be a killjoy, but whereas it's tacitly accepted that the rules may bend a little for someone who's very nearly 18, they don't bend far. If you know someone with a code, you can get a LiveJournal as long as you're 13 or over.

Eek! That reminds me - I've not written anything in my livejournal for ages! Just taken a quick look at my old one and it's pretty depressing stuff - I guess the theory was that if I was having a good time I'd be too busy to write in it. Oops. Anyway, I promise I'm not a depressive or anything.

But thanks for reminding me about LJ. What's the difference between LJ and that one you've got?

Entry to LJ is by payment or invitation only, to keep out the riff-raff, whereas anyone can have a blurty (even though it is otherwise exactly the same) and will only be ejected if caught breaking the rules (like being under 18).

A blog is an online journal, being short for weblog ... some trekkie will have been responsible for calling them 'logs', you mark my words. Blog is also now a verb, I blog, you blog, thou bloggest, he, she or it is a blogger.

I have had my Blurty blog account for about 4 months but I have never posted...just went on occasionally to check out Sarah's blog. BUT, I'm trying to start posting regularly. Mostly because my memory is crap and this is a good way to remember what the heck I did! LOL
