A friend of my father's was once on Mastermind ... he didn't tell anyone beforehand, but when Magnus said 'and a silversmith from Kendal in Cumbria' we knew there was only one of those. He didn't win; he was terrified, too. And the answers he lost on were 'fell' (q. 'what is the Norse word for a hillside or moor?') and 'Ruskin', which for a man from Kendal ought to have been fairly easy.

I got more than a contestant who took the life and works of JRRT once - mind you, he did look a bit like a rabbit caught in the headlights.

Do you know a silversmith and folkie called Tony Kelly, then? Cos it was him.

Funnily enough, I do know a Tony Kelly, but not the same one. The one I know is Irish, he isn't a silversmith, and his brothers managed to get all the brains he should have had, poor chap!

I'll have to see if my crazy aunt knows him. She's sort of loosely attached to the folk scene in Kendal.

I should be on Mastermind with my Specialist subject as Stargate SG-1... I reckon I could do it! Go on, ask me anything...

Just thought, with all the posting flying around here I'd better send replies to my inbox or I'll never find them...

Why is the sky blue?

(You didn't say the question *had* to be about SG1...)

Re Blurty, does anyone use non-IE browsers for it?

Only I just tried to use Opera, which was ok on it the other day, but it didn't like *at all* today.

Q. for Sarah B;

Why are all the planets through the stargate in the same flamin' pine forest?

I bet it's also the reason why all the planets in Blake's 7 were in the same flamin' disused quarry. (Well, actually, it wasn't the same - they used several different quarries in their search for authenticity, but they did all look like the same one!)

I'm sure there's an obscure part of 'The Origin of Species' that deals with 'Convergent evolution by means of budgetary constraints'

Bluebottle - it's got to do with light refraction through the ozone and stuff.

Jon - because actually the Stargate keepings sending them back to Colorado/British Columbia/Canada and they just haven't noticed yet...

Dante, I use NextScape 7.1 to view/access Blurty - works OK for me... just thought I'd mention it before this strays too deliciously off-topic!

My theory of evolution is that Darwin was adopted....

Did you know that (Doctor) Erasmus Darwin, who was paternal grandfather to the now-more-famous Charles, had also speculated about species changing due to natural selection several decades before the voyage of the 'Beagle'?

Well, yes, except that he never got any further than accepting that species might be mutable.

Darwin wasn't neccesarily the first to realise how it happened, and indeed only announced it in conjunction with Wallace. He was, however, the first person to be able to describe it properly and build a hugely convincing argument in a single work - the Origin. And that was a hell of an acheivement.
