Jon, how about a hint:
Here is a map of Michigan:

Keep in mind that most of the population lives in the southern part of the state (as you can tell by the roads and cities marked) rather than in the Upper Penninsula (where the pasties are). If you were from there, and were trying to explain where you lived without benefit of pencil and paper, what would you point at?
BTW, I live south of Ann Arbor (about 60 miles east of Detroit). This weekend I drove (with 2 friends) to Green Bay Wisconsin (shown on the other side of Lake Michigan), which was about a 450 mile drive each way. It took about 10 hours (mostly because the road was covered with snow from Milwaukee on--we saw about 10 cars in the ditch) to get there, and 8 to get home.
Of course, we crossed a time zone in the process, and also switched to daylight savings time at 2am on Sunday, so I got to set my watch back an hour Friday night, Forward an hour Saturday night, and forward another hour on Sunday.
BTW, I've been told that the difference between an American and a Brit is that the American thinks 100 years is a long time, while the Brit thinks 100 miles is a long distance.

"I've often said that the difference between British and American SF TV series is that the British ones have three-dimensional characters and cardboard spaceships, while the Americans do it the other way around."
