Can I ask a contentious question? Has anyone's office/school/home banned any non-Christian religious festivals?

Wasn't there something in the US about Halloween being banned because it was offensive to Wiccans?

I like Winterlude and even flew to one in January. I meant that I'm offended to see its name being press-ganged into PC service at various UK government bodies as a token to appease imaginary hordes of irate anti-Christmas protesters.

Gah. So over that stuff.

Most of the country is Christian, right?

So what is wrong with the majority celebrating a religious holiday. (no matter that is now over-commercialised...)

Each year companies and governments give themselves a bad (worse) name by doing something stupid like this, and each year the only responses from non-Christians are that they wish organisations would stop assuming that they're so sensitive that they will be driven to acts of violence by seeing Christmas ornaments in an Oxfam shop window.

The point of multiculturalism was, I thought, that all cultures could be valued and respected, and that none should be discriminated against -- and that includes the culture and beliefs of the majority.

Besides, a lot of Christmas ornaments and traditions -- mistletoe, anyone? -- don't have Christian roots.

Of course, the idea that modern "Christmas" is in any way religious is pretty moot.

Sure it has "spiritual meaning", but for the most part, it's celebrated as being about family, and being together and love, mostly devoid of specific Christian messages, and equally commonly celebrated as Christmas by the unreligious.

Yeah, "Winterval" is silly, unless you're actually trying to do something with it.

I can't wait until some blithering idiot says we can't possibly continue to use the Gregorian calendar...

Oh wait, I just said it.

Blither, blither, blither...

I was Church of Christ & we celebrated Christmas as an American, not religious, holiday-
I'm nothing now & don't care what you call it, as long as I get some candy-
wait, no, that one's Halloween...

Does anybody know when the feast of Saturnalia will be this year?

Also, mark Gravity Day on your calendar, December 25-
spend the day sacrificing to the gods of drop...

Long-time coming, but I've just got round to this thread!

My point, P-H, about the gollies in the Noddy book is that no black people that I know look like that. I find it more offensive that someone has decided that they are representative of some of my friends than that Enid Blyton picked on a toy that was popular when she wrote the books to be the baddies.

I do not want to ban holidays for any religious or ethnic groups and wish that certain British town councils would show the same courtesy to Christian groups.

I understand the reasons why Germany has banned certain symbols, but do not wish to see the English cross of St. George banned, just because racist groups have made use of it.

I don't even worry that Hollywood has decided that most villains are British, nor do I believe that most Americans therefore assume that all Brits are villains.

I saw some gollies on sale in the Lake District recently...I was really shocked to see them.

We should introduce to the world the GSD religious festivals.

Every 30 days a new form of debauchery. Sodomy on Mondays, Drunken-ness on Tuesdays, watching Neighbours on Wednesday; etc.

All symbols to be coloured dark blue and displayed on a flat black background with a white border which is to be 25% of the width of the image.

Basic creed is all things may be experienced but nothing is compulsory, except tolerance of others and their activities, as long as they show others the same tolerance.

This way we can have 12 or so religious days holiday/perversion day/ stay in bed and rest days/other per solar year and there should be no problems except for the narrow minded bigots who form most of our communities.

Skid: The whole "big lips and black curly hair and so on" image of golliwogs is a standard stereotype of that time I think. Compare the look-out of the unfortunate pirates in Asterix for example, which dates from a similar time.

But I agree, most African (and I mean non-coloured or white) people look nothing like that.

Heheh. This is a good point. Lawyers would be bored.

And somehow bored lawyers is a very scary thought....

What with the increase in the playing of a certain Jackson Brown song,
I'd be too annoyed to be bored...

Who was it that said we should kill all the lawyers?

It was probably a trainee lawyer with a cunning plan to secure a future monopoly in the market place :-)

Shakespeare's Henry VI said kill all the lawyers - at work it's thought, but thankfully not said, that accountant's should enjoy the same treatment!

And if they claim not to enjoy it, keep hitting until they say they do.
