The 7 Wonders of Swindon: The Tower of Brune. |
One of the 7 Wonders of Swindon: The Tower of Brunel |
Every great city should have a tower and since the highest place in Swindon is The John Murray Building I thought I would add a few stories to make it even more exciting - the reason for its size is given in the explanation at the 7 Wonders website. Keen eyed viewers will notice an England Soccer flag being displayed with startling regularity as the tower soars skyward. A concerted effort at soccer solidarity or a winsome result of Photoshop? You be the judge. And I liked the sky - it was there when I took the picture. Caption on the back reads: "Originally intended to be only 21 storeys, the 1976 Brunel Tower soared on to a dizzy 88 floors as the (surrealist controlled) Builder's Union refused to stop working until they were paid less money." Colour postcard, unnumbered, given out on UK, US, Pacific & Canadian tours for Something Rotten July - October 2004. 500 editions. |
