I'm with you PSD - If T & H were "one of the greatest pairings" in Jurisfiction, then the others must have been pretty poor! I guess book four will have to take place more in the Outland, since without H, Jurisfiction won't really be up to very much.

I was a gutted. She was a legend. I mean, the whole laundry label on Thursday's trousers thing was the best.

Mr F, what were you thinking? Couldn't you kill off someone else and do her later?

but if she hadn't been killed off, Thursday couldn't become the Bellman now could she?? Not when there would have been someone "more qualified" to do it. Also, if "she" were still around, Thursday would have still been "the apprentice" and wouldn't have been considered for the position.

Having only just finished reading WOLP my head is still spinning. I too am going to miss the commanding presence of H, and I doubt that anyone will be able to take up the reins in quite the same *unique* way.

I agree with AAC, Thursday really needed to end her pupillage though. The abilities she displays this time in the BookWorld obviously were going to put her on a par with her teacher in no short time, so you'd either get big conflicts or arrested development. It seemed a fairly gracious way out of those.

Re the team _ In my opinion some of the details from Granny Next's scenes in WOLP make the theory (which I seem to recall seeing mentioned in the original fforum, with a comment that it was a point that Jasper refused to discuss...) that she is actually an older version of Thursday _ who has travelled back in time at some point _ rather than Thursday's genuine grandmother look even more plausible: If that IS so then maybe she worked with H at some point (in objective time) before the "younger" Thursday did so and whoever referred to their famous teamwork was taking that into account too?

Simon - Hmmm, maybe, but sounds a bit too convoluted to be true (even for Mr F!), but I agree that it's highly plausible that Granny Next is Thursday.

AAC - I doubt Havisham would have enjoyed all the paperwork that came with the position of Bellman...

Belochka - What about *partnership*, rather than tutelage? Surely... And if the next book will be set partially in the real world as the special features suggest, then surely H wouldn't be "needed" so much and therefore couldn't she stay??? Well, I guess since she went in Great Expectations, she had to go, but ...

I was just fond of her, and I think the Red Queen will miss her too, in a weird kind of way.

You've all overlooked another possibility. Our Miss H may have run a race too far, but Great Expectations needs a star, and a generic has been given it's (now her) big chance.

Perhaps the new one fancies working for JurisFiction?

Indeed who's to say any one of the book people weren't already generics anyway?
Interesting thought

Milo - Never fear, I do about 2 disagreements and then disappear! From the perspective I've had when I've read the books: both Thursday and Haversham have had decided differences in opinion and methodology. If Thursday reached the point of knowledge/experience that would put her and mentor figure on a level pegging one of them would have to give way to continue the narrative. I'm biased but I don't think too many of us readers would've accepted some sort of compromise between the two of them. In their world one has to retain some sort of soi-distant relationship, and Thursday would always have to outdo the person she was directly learning from, by instinct or acquired knowledge. I don't think an equitable partnership was workable, apart from an underlying and abiding respect.

You know, you could well be right. Havisham never did want to settle for second best in anything, indeed, I suppose that's what caused "it". I was a bit shocked that she seeemed to go for little reason and with little show and the partnership didn't seem to last long - I expected more laundry label type exploits!

And don't worry about disagreeing - this is a forum, and without disagreement / discussion there wouldn't be any forum. A lot of my ideas are put up for clarification and discussion anyway, rather than "this is what I think and what I will always think and anyone who says otherwise is wrong and foolish". Please, keep talking!

The only thing that gets me in a forum is if people try to put you (personally) down or are rude. You are neither and I value your opinion, so please continue!

Ah, please Milo. Don't give me room to maneouvre otherwise I just tie myself in knots. LOL

Aside from the near total outrageousness of Miss Haversham's behaviour, what made her such a wonderful mentor figure to Thursday was their closeness. Irrespective of what both of them would think at the same time, their respect for each other had a sincerity which was obvious, imho, to readers, and quite tender. They needed each other but Miss H had the kind of instabilities that you could not tolerate in a 'hero' for a long period of time. For whatever reasons Thursday will display the forgiveable flaws but you cannot do that for every character. Miss H had the edge on irresponsibilty though, I will always feel an attachment for any lady who has such a speed addiction. The Very Rev. Toredlyne indeed! LMAO

*laughs*

I think you're certainly in the right forum for knot-tying...

I don't think H was ever intended as a hero figure in this book, or LIAGB, purely a mentor-partner-in-crime figure rather than a central one. I do agree that (although H would never admit it) they were both very fond of each other, and this was portrayed very well indeed.

A tangential comment, but did you buy Poe's clock perchance? There seems to be a decided timekeeping noise coming from you sig. <smile>

I thought that might be some awful pun, but then I did realise that it's not got four legs and 'ticks'. Unless insect infestations have a new name these days :)

Ticks are indeed pretty gruesome. If you try pulling them out their mouthparts break off in your skin, and often go septic. Not nice....

Thank you PSD. I can safely say that I have learnt a great deal in my weeks here, whether I'll ever be able to use that knowledge I'm not so sure ;)

Oh and if you need any pointers for incredibly gross opthalmic surgery pictures you only have to ask! I can also say that a huge volume on cardiology that I once came across was written by a gentleman named Wellington Hung. I've always wanted to drop that into conversation at some point.

<snif!> I was absolutely shocked when I read about her death. I was still reeling from the two deaths before (the Minator one was particularly gruesome!), and then I get hit with the hat trick!

Re that cardiology expert; he was of course notorious for the sanguinity of his surgical procedures, and was therefore known as Bloody Wellington Hung ....

Anybody seen my coat?
