Greetings, Jasper.

We treked over to Mesa Verde National Park, located in the American Southwest, to visit the site of pre-historic communities built by hand by ancestors of today's Native Americans. It was no surprise that we found the audio version of First Among Sequels among the artifacts. These were pre-literate people who used stories to organize their community life. Stories told them when to plant and harvest; what behavior to expect of the animals with whom they shared the mesa; and stories were the basis of healing. The same stories are used in the pueblo (village) communities where their descendants live today. New prevention and treatment programs for substance abuse for Native Americans now rely on the ancient stories to connect young people to their culture and connect generations within contemporary communities.

Best wishes,

Beth and Cora
