Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky…

I could be equally cruel and choose something like a projective plane for the next item, but I think I shall go for something a little more mundane.

0) The item is vegetable.

Have at it!

0) The item is vegetable.
1) is it edible? I could make the usual justifications and rationalizations and say that you could in fact eat it and not die, but really that is stretching things quite a bit. No, it is not something you should eat.

2) is it carnivorous? No, and I'm glad of it!
3) Does it like the sun? Not especially.

Just in case I have inadvertantly misled, while the item in question is vegetable in composition, it need not actually be a plant. Then again, I might be saying this for the sole purpose of *deliberately* misleading…

Is it bigger than a breadbox?

(yay!)

And would a Muse deliberately mislead? Oh, I so sure that would never happen....

6a) would a Muse deliberately mislead? Probaby not, although I have been known to include so many caveats and vague exceptions in the effort to avoid deception that you fine folks become more confused than before. Truly, I work in mysterious ways (if only because I don't know what I'm doing).

As I was watching old clips of What's My Line? on YouTube the other day, it occurred to me that there is an interesting difference in strategy between that game and this, despite the same basic setup of yes-or-no questions. In this game the number of questions is fixed, whereas in WML it's the number of "No" answers. This means the panelists there are willing to "waste" questions that may not be as helpful, if they think they might get a "Yes" answer, and they'll tend to take a cautious approach. Here the better strategy is to ask questions to which the answer has about an equal change of being "yes" or "no", so as to narrow down the possibilities in as few total questions as possible.

All of which is a long way of saying that it's a good thing we're not playing by WML rules, or we'd be at six down and four to go!
