Right, you lot know me well enough by now, and I don't know what I want to do with my life.

Suggestions for a career, please....

Archbishop.

No, seriously, how about going into journalism? You write well and you've got that stubborn investigative streak. I think you'd be very good at it.

Yeah, and you drink ebough for it already ... (issa joke issa joke)

Don't ask *me*. You don't think I planned my life, do you? I just drifted into it (although 'drifted' possibly has too much dynamism to describe the actual process).

How about radio comedy scriptwriter?

Professional Rock Climbing instructor for ankle-biters. They'd love your Red/pink/green/yellow/color-of-the-moment hair! Plus, it'd be fun. Not always terribly lucrative, but then again, who needs lots of money when you're doing what you enjoy??

I'd like to be a writer, but it's bloody hard work, you know. I've been sitting about racking my brains all afternoon, and finally come up with some material for WN. Half a page of throwaway gags for five hours sweat ... this writing for pleasure and profit thing is difficult. Especially since the profit part seems to have done a runner.

Seeing as Sarah has already mentioned journalism, I think I'd cast a vote for critic. Incisiveness, personality and a good brain are a help, although some people seem to get by without those. Only thing is it doesn't seem to generate vast amounts of respect, or much goodwill come to think of it..

There is a distinct lack of lay-about bums in the world. I'm sure that if you attempted this particular career you would discover your niche.

Failing that, how about a neurosurgeon. Your lack of medicinal knowledge is no barrier if you first practice in somewhere like Siberia.

Voice-over work for radio and ads. You do have a lovely speaking voice and you've done talking newspapers for the blind, or something similar, if I remember.

Work your way through the English Ranks of KUMON, then procede to take on the Japanese section of the company.

For those that don't know what Kumon is, it is a Maths and English tutoring program for children run by a Japanese company.

Failing that, Yvan eht Nioj!

In my experience, doss about in jobs you hate and which pay peanuts for a few years, while your mum circles job ads in all the papers for you, until one day she circles one that actually sounds good but would never have occurred to you...apply, and get.

(I think i may have been a bit lucky with that last bit.)

Writing of various sorts sounds like your forte, but it is very hard to make any money (as you'll know...)

Oh, don't move to London. It's bad.

If you've got the latin for it, you could have a go at judging.
Otherwise it's coal mining. Hacking and hewing is your standard technique, I'm lead to believe...

Well, if anyone comes up with a decent idea for PSD, then I'm also open for options! I'll be starting at the 'interim job' in August, and seeing where it goes from there, but I don't think 'Office Administrator', even if it is for the government, is going to hold my attention for very long!

I drink to drown my sorrows. Unfortunately they've learnt how to swim.

Oh following Skiffle's ideas, what about recording audio books?

Or is that only done by famous people?
(not familiar with the process)

And while we're at it, anybody knows of a place that employs people on a part-time basis, or rather, objectives basis, to work at home, meaning the person can work in her own time, in another country, then send things by mail on the deadlines? During August/September, or more?

What did you do your degree in? Wasn't there some career counselling or work placements provided during that? Doesn't the S in PSD stand for Scientist -- if so what about something um scientific or does that mean starting out as a lab assisting or torturing mice? What have other of your uni mates done - I am all for asking around and seeing what worked for people in a similar situation. Also - don't you have any on-line career website things - there are some here (Aust) - which guide you I am sure they would abound in the UK. Also, maybe PR - yeah possibly an evil industry! but you might fit in (not with the evil but with the wide cultural references and knowledge you have + sarcasm and wit)

Karen
