So, is my tithe comprised of money, brain cells, or both?

I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that; I would've done a spit-take.

What a simply charming expression. A noun constructed by compounding two verbs with just a hint of onomatapoeia. 'Nose-squirt' pales in comparison.

A soupçon of onomatapoeia, if you will.

Though, "nose-squirt" offers its own appeal as one conjures it up in one's own mind.

Yewwww!

If a nose-aquirt starts in the mind, I don't want those snotty brain cells, thank you very much!

I thought most modern TVs could handle both PAL and NTSC (check the manual!). Ours will also do SECAM, as will our VCR - not that I ever need it.

Would any friendly soul care to DVD the shows and let me have a copy? I would do it myself but you can't get Sky without a card, and they don't supply cards to Germany!! (There are "channels" through which you can acquire a card, but somehow I don't trust them, not to mention the fact that they are very expensive)

Tieff, you are correct that in Europe, most tvs will support both PAL, NTSC and some even Secam, unfortunately this is is not true in the U.S.A. where many if not most sets are NTSC only.

My guess is yes, and I will, if it is any good, buy it, but that is likely to be 6 months after broadcast. In the meantime, I will keep a dvd copy if possible.

And I thought America was hi-tech!!! So big, and so provincial....
From what i've learned about globalisation in past couple of weeks, they'd better watch out or they'll be truly in the backwoods.

Perhaps provincial, perhaps also driven by a desire to keep control of release dates of video/DVD products?

Mooxico, the NTSC/PAL/Secam split is purely historical, but you are right about region coding.

It doesn't work, though as in the U.K. it is estimated that over 60% of dvd players can play all regions. While shops can't legally sell U.S. disks, (they are not certificated for public showing in the U.K.) you can import them for personal use. Even online stores like Amazon are happy to sell across regions.

One valid reason for attempting to stop cross-region sale is that films frequently have different distribution deals for different markets. While Fox may hold the rights in the U.S.A. it could be Universal who distribute in the U.K. for example.

I buy U.S. disks because despite a slight drop in picture quality, I can sometimes gain in sound quality and the extras are frequently better.

I can get movies earlier. I have just bought and watched "Clerks 2", which was not shown at our local cinema and still has no U.K. dvd release date.

Interesting! I didn't know that about 60% of U.K. dvd players being able to play all regions. Do you have to seek out these players, or can you just go to the shop and easily get them?

I think you're right about the distribution deals being one of the reasons to stop cross-region sales.

What did you think of "Clerks 2"?

Oooh...just seen an advert on TV...apparently the making of is on this sunday (10/12) on Sky One as well...

...although it's beyond me why they're showing the making of BEFORE the show!

Virtually all the @#$%& "never heard of 'em before" brands found in the supermarkets can have their region changed or removed via simple codes on the remote, or sometimes a different remote.
A quick search of the internet would throw up the required codes. Others need to be chipped, but these machines are also readily available from specialist suppliers and even some of the smaller chains. You can't usually get the big-name branded ones from anywhere other than a specialist, although we have both a Panasonic player and a Sony player/dvd recorder/hdd recorder/freeview digital tuner which are multi-region.

I liked Clerks 2. I probably prefer 1, but I have only watched the new 1 once so far. We have started on the Christmas movies now and so will not see too many others for a couple of weeks.

Sky are putting a series of short videos up called "The 12 days of Hogwatch". They are well worth a check.

then go to the video section.

Have a look at the rest of the site. It is quite good.

Just read that Hogfather will be shown on the Hallmark channel here in the US, though I don't know when. (And I have no idea how reliable that is, so take it with a grain of salt.)

A short lookup on Google brought up the info that ProSieben has purchased Hogfather for showing in 2007 in Germany. The most reliable info about this I found here. Unfortunately, no info if Andreas Brandhorst will do the german dialogs. <holds his breath>
