Jon _
When I was very young I had very fair hair, and liked white chocolate a lot, so my parents bought me a 'Milky Bar Kid' costume.

"The Milky Bar Kid is quick and tough,
And only the best is good enough:
The fastest gun, the brightest star,
The goodness that's in Milky Bar."

I'm sorry to say, Simon, that at my school we were rude, vulgar, little boys, and the lyrics we sang to The Milky Bar Kid were a bit different.

Incidentally, if you really want to torture yourself go to Magda's website and look at the cakes. And then consider the distance between those cakes and your mouth. (Obviously this doesn't apply to people from Michigan).

BTW, if you really want chocolate, look at these two that aren't linked in yet:

Nah, we could never be part of the Union. Can you see us doing all that pledging allegiance and my-country-tis-of-thee swearing loyalty to the flag business? We'd be just too damn embarrassed.

Furthermore, we don't know what school grades, valedictorians, semesters, proms, sororities, fraternities, sloppy Joes, hominy grits, Shriners, GOP, PAC, CREEP, EPSN, RBI, Port of Authority, downtown, uptown, Jayhawkers, Cornhuskers, power plays, or hoosiers are.

We don't have school graduation ceremonies. We just RLF when they open the gates.

We'd never fit in.

American High school ceremonies and honours always look slightly odd to Brits. Homecoming Queen ? Try suggesting something like that at an English high school and you'd get half the boys dressed as Freddie Mercury. And Hostess of the Year at Universities ? It was in the resume of a Miss America contestant, from roughly the same time I was at University. If anyone had tried suggesting such a thing at Sheffield University, they'd have been bundled into the back of the Women's minibus and dropped over a handy Derbyshire cliff.

Can you imanige a UK high school graduation? It would descend into mayhem. *All* the yearbooks would have obscenities in them. The class awards would be on the lines of 'Biggest B*stard We're Glad to See the Back Of', 'Most Sadistic Teacher', 'Class Sneak' and 'School Bully'.

And the half of the boys not dressed as Freddie Mercury wouldn't come dressed up at all, cos it's a girly thing innit.

oh well, your loss....besides, where would we put the extra star? It would kinda ruin the effect.

Sorry AAC,

I have no idea what you mean about the extra star.

Also glad that British schools don't have Prom nights. So far as I can tell from books and films, they seem to be some kind of ritual humiliation for all the teenagers who don't look like Barbie and Ken. Well, maybe not *that* bad, but not much fun if you're short/fat/wear glasses/ braces etc.

Can I just say I understand power-plays, semesters (and trimesters, which is what Durham had), fraternities (they come with egalites) and proms (they're what you push kids in, right?).

I guess most yanks wouldn't understand JCRs, JCBs and the CAP. What about pasties?

There was a shop near where I live nicknamed 'The Nasty Pasty'.

And a village shop called the 'Near and Handy' was generally referred to as the 'Queer and Randy'.

For non-Brits, 'randy' means 'horny'. Hence much British sniggering over all-American heroes called Randy.

Way back at the top of this thread, I listed all the books I packed in my bag.
Yesterday I finished reading 'The King of the Copper Mountains', by Paul Biegel. It's a children's story, translated from dutch original, and will go on my shelves with the other obscure gems of children's literature I've found over the years. Old King Mansolain, whose beard is so long it trails on the floor, is dying. The Wonder Doctor knows that the Golden Speedwell will save him, but the journey to fetch it will take many days. The King needs to be stimulated by stories, but the only other person left in the Copper Palace is the loyal hare, who told the King the last story he knew 7 years ago.
As the doctor travels, he meets other animals and sends them to the palace to tell their stories and keep the King alive until he can return with the cure. This is a truly enchanting book, with a host of mini-stories within the overall setting. The animals and their interactions are delightful. I particularly love the illustration of the hare tying an apron around the wolf's waist, as he orders the wolf to do the washing up.
Well worth picking up, if you see a copy somewere.

I vaguely seem to recall reading 'The King of the Copper Mountains' back when I was still in my teens. It might have been in the school library...

Earned myself some Brownie points this afternoon by taking in the clean laundry for Mum, without being asked.

How many Brownie points do I need to earn a Girl Guide ?

Sorry to disillusion any Girl Guides who may be reading this, but Skiffle is in fact not a lesbian. Or if she is, she's keeping it very quiet. ;-)

Perhaps she's hoping to trade the Guide for a Ranger?*

I like my men's swords to be intact.

And no doubt, so do the men.
