Currently I do not believe even in the hybrid Nordic/Celt/Pict/AngloSaxon language they use in Yorkshire that a place would be named Arkengarthdale.

It sounds more like a character out of Douglas Adams.

And yet, my grandfather assures me there is nothing funny about it (eei-yoop)

I love it when people stare at you and say, "That's not funny."

They're so... funny.

Yes, but what about when they say "what's so funny?" and you tell them, and they stare at you?

The stare is almost the same. So still funny.

Arkengarthdale

a beutiful part of the country, with some great pubs in Reeth, Langthwaite and Low Row, but sadly Booze is too small to support one.
My favourite is "The Red Lion in Langthwaite. It sells Black Sheep beer (from Masham) and, yes, it does advertise Baaaah meals.

some pictures not mine

You have just reminded me of a terrible cafe near cockatoo that is a cow? Was a bit garish really. Too many cow related objects in the place.
Was the Black Sheep Beer nice?

Skids,

I stand, or rather, hobble corrected. I will dig out my AA atlas and look further into this as it may be somewhere to put on the holiday in the UK we are hoping to have.

But I still think it is a Douglas Adams name. Perhaps he got his character names from Yorkshire. But there are sufficient interesting names in England for a complete series of books. Chipping Norton - which sound painful for Norton; East Looe - which implies other Looes; Bury St Edmonds - but will accept burying of Noel Edmonds; and so on.

Agree with all "Meaning of Liff" comments above.

I still like the name "Brands Hatch". Is it a reference to the plotting that goes into creating a new product line, or that the reason for so many very similar things on a supermarket shelf is that they have come out of the rear ends of chickens?

It is the origin for the expression cracking open a new market.

It can't be ...Brands Hatch is a racing circuit, Newmarket is a racecourse :p My personal favourite is Blubberhouses in North Yorkshire, conjours up all sorts of weird & wonderful images!

Not too far off, BWH, although not so much tears, as springs, as I understand it.

Of course, making kids cry is much more fun than looking at a bit of water bubbling up out of the ground. Unless your in Victoria or NSW, of course.

How can you seal fat? Stealing it is certainly possible though, just watch Fight Club.
