As a commited (alcohol) drinker, Nem, all I can suggest is that if you don't want to drink, but your friends are trying to force you to, then perhaps it is time to change friends!

Although I enjoy alcohol, I would never try to force it on someone else. There are enough soft drinks available for anyone to enjoy the socialising without having to have an alcoholic drink. I would draw the line at buying someone Coke (tm), though.

Its fine with my good friends, its the people that you don't know that well, you are friends with them but they are peripheral. They just can't seem to take 'I don't drink' seriously! Could just be a national thing though! ;P we aint the sick man of Europe for no reason after all!

I am currently sitting it the most awfully designed lecture theatre in the whole wide world, I am 5 ft nothing and I find it cramped! This is hell, only half an hour to go though, bluming uni! grrr!

Do what I do. Tell them that you're alcohol intolerant and that it makes you puke uncontrollably.

Firstly, food intolerances and allergies are trendy. Secondly, no-one wants to risk getting puked on.

:)

Although I do drink from time to time - I just pick and choose where, when and who with!

Allergies are trendy? You have GOT to be joking. What's trendy about being itchy and rashy and sneezy and vomity?

Meanwhile "the history of Scottish inclusion policy startign in 1730" Sounds like a night out with Rimmer!
(I think I would actually need alcohol to get through that lecture)

Well maybe it's a cultural thing - but here it seems to be very fashionable to have a food intolerance - there's a whole thing about going for patch tests and cutting out this food or that food or the other food.....

We call it 'dieting'

However, as most of them seem to involve cutting out chocolate, I have never bothered with them.

I'm chocolate intolerant myself.

It makes me put on weight.............

Wouldn't you say that your body is pretty tolerant of chocolate, since it does not secrete it again but lets it join?

Chocolate? Did someone mention chocolate? I seem to have run out of the substance!

Sorry for my disappearance everyone. I just got so caught up in everything that I haven't had time to do much of late! But I am back now!

Chris, your book has arrived! Unfortunately so has the latest Tom Holt, so after I have finished Chindi (Jack McDevitt), that is my next read and then it will be yours. I will heed your advice about the last bit.

Saying allergies are trendy makes it sound like people have them by choice. As someone who actually happens to have a life-threatening allergy to chocolate (and nuts, and seafood), I can tell you I certainly did not choose this.

Thanks again, Skid. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. If the funniness factor in that book is at 6 or 7, the new book`s at 10. Thousand. (Can you tell I`m anxious for this damn thing to come out already?) The title I`ve settled on is Read This Instead. I`m getting all the usual post-submission, pre-publication worries that I always wonder if other authors experience. Will the first hundred copies feature a wonderful printing error that removes all the vowels? Will I discover a day too late that I`ve unwittingly stolen all the contents from a verbatim dream I had about an obscure Python episode? Will I die in some freak accident before anyone gets a chance to read it? (This last one is more common than you might think. The mind`s a funny thing.)

So I suppose the best thing to do there would be to post us all an advance copy, then hide in a cellar so at least *one* person gets to read it first!
